RUHVAYA — The art of living well
The informed shopper

Before you buy, read the supplement label.

A practical guide to servings, %RDA, ingredients and FSSAI details—so the small print becomes useful information.

The key idea

Read the daily serving, nutrient quantities and warnings together. A single headline number cannot tell you whether a product is right for you.

Turn the pack around first

The front introduces the product. The back is where you can compare it. Before choosing a flavour or format, locate the recommended daily usage, the nutrient quantities and the ingredient list. Read them as a group rather than as isolated claims. If the online listing shows only a front view, ask for a clear photograph of the full label before deciding.

Keep the serving size attached to every number

Consider a hypothetical label that lists 30 mg per two-gummy serving. One gummy would provide 15 mg, not 30 mg. This is a maths example, not a recommended amount or a RUHVAYA specification. When comparing packs, write the serving and quantity on the same line. Also check how many servings are in the pack; a jar containing 60 gummies is not necessarily a 60-day supply.

Use %RDA as context, not a score

For relevant nutrients, Indian health-supplement labelling includes quantities expressed against applicable recommended dietary allowances. The rules also require recommended usage and a warning against exceeding it. A percentage helps describe the nutrient contribution; it does not measure absorption, overall product quality or the benefit you will feel. Do not assume that a larger percentage is automatically the better choice. [1]

Read beyond the headline ingredient

Review the complete ingredient information, including components used for flavour or texture, and check allergen and suitability statements. NIH’s supplement guidance recommends looking at active ingredients, quantities and other ingredients together. For your own comparison, make a short list of ingredients you need clarified. Ask specific questions rather than relying on general phrases such as clean, premium or natural. [3]

Check identity, traceability and the licence

Find the manufacturer or responsible business details, batch information and expiry or best-before information. FSSAI offers a way to check the authenticity and status of a licence or registration. Match the details rather than relying on an FSSAI logo alone. A licence check answers a business-registration question; it does not tell you whether a particular supplement meets your personal nutritional needs. [2]

Warnings are part of the decision

The health-supplement rules call for the statement “NOT FOR MEDICINAL USE”, directions and relevant precautions, including that supplements do not replace a varied diet. Read restrictions and storage instructions before purchase. NIH also cautions that supplements can interact with medicines and matter around surgery. Bring the actual label to a clinician or pharmacist when suitability is uncertain. [1] [3]

Keep a record you can use later

Photograph the label and retain the pack while using the product. If you have a quality concern, a batch number and purchase record make your question easier to investigate. If a brand cannot explain the daily serving, the ingredients or the business behind the product, pause the decision. Good packaging should help you understand the product, not make important details harder to find.

Put it into practice

Three things to take away

  • Compare quantity per daily serving, not per jar.
  • Check ingredients, warnings, licence details and batch information.
  • Keep the label for future questions and professional advice.
